Can a non-professional sell greeting cards made with great animal pictures that she/he took ?

do you have to be a professioanl photographer to get the copy rights for your photos?

Can a non-professional sell greeting cards made with great animal pictures that she/he took ?
My mother has been selling greeting cards for years with pictures she took...





I don't think she makes a lot of money but she keeps doing it.
Reply:You can have greeting cards made from your animal pictures to sell but please keep in mind where you obtained your pictures. Many zoo's have policies against professional photographers taking pictures for resale. You often need permission in advance and I assume pay some sort of fee. It is similar to model photos you need a "model release" from the zoo. Otherwise if the animals are pets or captured in their native habitat you can sell photos that you took as you own the copy right when you pressed the shutter.

Reply:A non-professional cannot sell pictures, because at that point, by definition, you have become a professional ;-)





Anyone who takes a picture owns the rights to that picture (now whether you can make $$$ off the pictures depends on what they are of......... )





So, no you don't have to be a pro to have the rights to your work.
