I want them to look professional. I bought some inkjet cards from strathford but they are too thin. I would like something heavier and glossy on one side but not sure if something like that exist that is compatible with an inkjet printer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
What is the best kind of paper to buy to print greeting cards w/ an inkjet printer?
For a normal ink-jet printer you need heavy weight paper from 110 to 180 gramweight. (anything heavier will clog up the printer).
I usually use 100S-180g. white or off-white cardboard for my greeting cards.
For special cards almost any nice looking paper that catches your eye can be used.
(The cardboard that is glossy on one side is too heavy and usually gets "stuck" in the printer (at least the only one I've found). Not all papers accept the ink jet ink correctly, on some glossy type papers the ink runs, on others it looks "pale".
You can replace the glossy cardboard with a heavyweight photographic paper.. Just make sure it's one with a plain reverse side (some have the brand name printed on the back).
Elephant skin paper (110g.) has a satiny finish and is excellent for cardwork, so are the "marbled" papers...
I often use the pink and blue marbled ones for baby announcements.
I printed my daughters wedding invitations on grey marbled cardboard, and it gave them a very lovely effect. (Most of the marbled papers have matching envelopes).
One that gives good results and looks very elegant is a heavy-weight tracing (vegetable) paper. (the kind architects use).It is a semi-transparent paper, reminds one of parchment. Be careful when folding it, the lesser weight one folds better
I sometimes print my cards on 2 pages...the outer one in cardboard, and the inner page on heavy tracing paper. It looks very smart (also great for wedding menus).
Reply:I make a lot of greeting cards for family and friends. I use plain old card stock. Sometimes I print the inside of the card on parchment type paper and glue it into the card. You can experiment with the edges of the card stock with different cuts (you can buy scissors that cut different designs). I have actually torn the edge and then gone over it with a little sandpaper to give it a frayed look. I also use an inkjet printer and have had no problem with card stock (110lb). Reply:Unless the packaging specifically says the paper is compatible with inkjet printers, the only way to know is to experiment. Some paper types might bleed with inket. Some may not absorb the ink at all.

I want to do something special with the sympathy cards we got when my brother passed away. We've got about 40 or 50. I am not really wanting to put them in a scrapbook. But if I can't come up with something else I guess that is what I will do.

If you want to sell any of your designs to shops you will probs get very little per item as shops will be wanting a 100% mark up so you will need to see if its worth it after cost of materials and a wage for yourself as no point in working for nothing. They would also want exclusive rights to the designs that you make for them. Also all of the materials that you use to make your craft items would have to be copyright free...maybe ok to use the papers/images etc for items that you give away but not if you want to sell them.

If they reject you then start swinging for the fences. Google it up and collect yourself some contacts, fix up your portfolio, and hack out a well prepared presentation and your in like Flynt. Be careful to hide your best ideas but be sure to allude to them when talking to the representative(s). Best of luck to you.

What do you do with old Greeting cards?
My husband insists on saving greeting cards from the past 15 years. I live in a condo and don't have the space for every valentine, birthday, etc, etc., I receive. He thinks they are memories - I think it's trash. What do you think?

I throw lots of mine out, but I would never have the audacity to tell someone else he or she should throw away something he or she values. If he does not want it, he will throw it out. If you want to be crafty, you can cover a box that holds your Christmas decorations with cut-outs from the Christmas cards. You or your husband can cut out some of the favorite pictures, put glitter or fake snow on the pictures, laminate, or shellac the pictures and hang those on the tree. Or decopauge cut-outs from the cards onto ornaments. Maybe make some magnets from the cut-out cards. That way, you will save some space but still have the memory of the card. And you will be displaying your memories rather than piling them in a box where you never look at them. I had a teacher who brought the class all of her old cards and she had us cut out the pictures, and arrange the pictures on wood plaques for the walls. Some of the arrangements looked surprisingly nice.

Reply:My boyfriend is like you. I am like your husband. I have boxes of cards under my bed, years worth of cards and correspondence.
But I have compromised and started throwing away cards that don';t have a personal message. I have tons of cards that say "merry christmas! love, Name" and I've started throwing them away somewhat reluctantly.
In fact, unless people have something to substantial to say in a card, I wish they'd save the postage and just send an email. I like getting mail but not for the sake of having something to open. I want to read an update or a message of some sort.
I like the idea of sending the old cards to senior centers. I am sure that schools or craft leagues would welcome the extra supplies as well.

Reply:I say use the 3 R's rule: reduce, re-use or recycle. If you don't want them anymore, throw them out. Or you could see if a local shelter or daycare center would want them for art projects.
Reply:Before you toss them, check with the local senior citizens centers. I have reletives who live in retirement communities who recycle old greeting cards into new ones as art projects.

Reply:I always throw away Christmas and Birthday Cards, but keep special ones, like all the cards we got when my husband and I were married or the cards we received when my daughter was born. See if you can comprimise and have him keep only the very special ones. Or you could make a scrap book out them , so that they are neatly packed in a book and won't take up as much space. And don't give him anymore cards for his birthday or any other occasions, to keep the card clutter down.

Reply:Depends on how much information is written inside these greeting cards. If the messages are basically the usual "Hi love, hope you have a Merry Christmas, love xx", then I´d agree with you and throw them out. If, however, there are longer messages or mini-"letters" inside, I could understand your husband´s nostalgic attachment. Perhaps you could reach a compromise and go through them together, filtering out those that say very little, and keeping those of more importance. Personally, I put all greeting cards in the trash can after the event, but, for example, do keep holiday postcards that family/friends send me, as the messages etc. carry information that will bring back memories in years to come.

What do you do with old Greeting cards?
I throw lots of mine out, but I would never have the audacity to tell someone else he or she should throw away something he or she values. If he does not want it, he will throw it out. If you want to be crafty, you can cover a box that holds your Christmas decorations with cut-outs from the Christmas cards. You or your husband can cut out some of the favorite pictures, put glitter or fake snow on the pictures, laminate, or shellac the pictures and hang those on the tree. Or decopauge cut-outs from the cards onto ornaments. Maybe make some magnets from the cut-out cards. That way, you will save some space but still have the memory of the card. And you will be displaying your memories rather than piling them in a box where you never look at them. I had a teacher who brought the class all of her old cards and she had us cut out the pictures, and arrange the pictures on wood plaques for the walls. Some of the arrangements looked surprisingly nice.
Reply:I have kept most of mine. But now we are moving to a house from our apartment, and I kind of want to get rid of them. I don't want to take a lot of stuff to our new home, to collect dust. But I have a hard time getting rid of things. I am not sure what to do.
Reply:I take the tear them in half, and mail the tops of the cards to St. Jude Childrens Ranch. I have done this for years, someone once told me that the children create with them.

Why throw them away?
Reply:My boyfriend is like you. I am like your husband. I have boxes of cards under my bed, years worth of cards and correspondence.
But I have compromised and started throwing away cards that don';t have a personal message. I have tons of cards that say "merry christmas! love, Name" and I've started throwing them away somewhat reluctantly.
In fact, unless people have something to substantial to say in a card, I wish they'd save the postage and just send an email. I like getting mail but not for the sake of having something to open. I want to read an update or a message of some sort.
I like the idea of sending the old cards to senior centers. I am sure that schools or craft leagues would welcome the extra supplies as well.

Reply:I say use the 3 R's rule: reduce, re-use or recycle. If you don't want them anymore, throw them out. Or you could see if a local shelter or daycare center would want them for art projects.
Reply:Before you toss them, check with the local senior citizens centers. I have reletives who live in retirement communities who recycle old greeting cards into new ones as art projects.

How can I access yahoo greeting cards?
I have Rogers Yahoo high speed internet. It has recently been reconfigured and I can no longer find the american greetings service. I paid a fee for access to the full range of greeting cards and yet now, I can't access the service through rogers or yahoo and when I go to the american greetings website it doesn't recognize my account.
