What is the best kind of paper to buy to print greeting cards w/ an inkjet printer?

I want them to look professional. I bought some inkjet cards from strathford but they are too thin. I would like something heavier and glossy on one side but not sure if something like that exist that is compatible with an inkjet printer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

What is the best kind of paper to buy to print greeting cards w/ an inkjet printer?
For a normal ink-jet printer you need heavy weight paper from 110 to 180 gramweight. (anything heavier will clog up the printer).

I usually use 100S-180g. white or off-white cardboard for my greeting cards.

For special cards almost any nice looking paper that catches your eye can be used.

(The cardboard that is glossy on one side is too heavy and usually gets "stuck" in the printer (at least the only one I've found). Not all papers accept the ink jet ink correctly, on some glossy type papers the ink runs, on others it looks "pale".

You can replace the glossy cardboard with a heavyweight photographic paper.. Just make sure it's one with a plain reverse side (some have the brand name printed on the back).

Elephant skin paper (110g.) has a satiny finish and is excellent for cardwork, so are the "marbled" papers...

I often use the pink and blue marbled ones for baby announcements.

I printed my daughters wedding invitations on grey marbled cardboard, and it gave them a very lovely effect. (Most of the marbled papers have matching envelopes).

One that gives good results and looks very elegant is a heavy-weight tracing (vegetable) paper. (the kind architects use).It is a semi-transparent paper, reminds one of parchment. Be careful when folding it, the lesser weight one folds better

I sometimes print my cards on 2 pages...the outer one in cardboard, and the inner page on heavy tracing paper. It looks very smart (also great for wedding menus).
Reply:I make a lot of greeting cards for family and friends. I use plain old card stock. Sometimes I print the inside of the card on parchment type paper and glue it into the card. You can experiment with the edges of the card stock with different cuts (you can buy scissors that cut different designs). I have actually torn the edge and then gone over it with a little sandpaper to give it a frayed look. I also use an inkjet printer and have had no problem with card stock (110lb). Reply:Unless the packaging specifically says the paper is compatible with inkjet printers, the only way to know is to experiment. Some paper types might bleed with inket. Some may not absorb the ink at all.

If it were me, I would start by compiling a portfolio, of as many as you can. I would start with smaller card companies, Write letters,

request appointments to view samples.

I would look at specialty shops and novelty type card shops, get the publisher name of the back, do some research about them, try to find companies with not the same style but the same feel of what you do, so there will be interest.

And Try, Try again.

You may also look at local printing companies, produce your own

cards. Market them to small businesses. Figure the cost and what you need to make, and "pre sell" or take orders for them., Think ot of the box man, (you're the artist) :)

Reply:I have found it to be very cost efficient to print my own. Just be sure that the printer you use is top notch (Epsons are excellent for reproduction work) and that your inks are archival quality and lightfast. Also, find a good source for your envelopes, clearbags, ect. Make sure to factor in these costs for your price plus your time. I generally package mine as single or 5packs and have sold with great success. I find that heavyweight matte papers from Epson work the best for clear crisp images with the truest color match. Reply:If you print in small quantities it's ok, depending on your paper - if it's a good quality non-absorbent paper %26amp; you can use a reduced ink setting and the colour still comes true.

Remember you'll need a cost-efficient source of not just ink %26amp; paper, but also envelopes and clear bags (a MUST for retailing since inkjet/laser inks can smear). I find my cards often sell my work, %26amp; I have a good wholesale source - so it's effective for me.

But if you want to print large quantities, the price per piece goes way down - shop around and get quotes. If you can give the printer the camera-ready file that saves a lot since printers charge big bucks for photographing/ scanning and setup.

Every Christmas I still get picture cards from Walgreens. Just upload the picture and select a backdrop and they make the cards. It is very nice and pretty cheap.
Reply:Yes, I still send cards thru the mail. I live far from my family and this is always nice to send. I send cards for ALL holidays (including St. Patrick's Day) as well as Birthday's and anniversary cards.

If you buy them in bulk from Hallmark they give great discounts and also have a point system for free stuff.

I want to do something special with the sympathy cards we got when my brother passed away. We've got about 40 or 50. I am not really wanting to put them in a scrapbook. But if I can't come up with something else I guess that is what I will do.

We used to display our Christmas cards by taking a large juice can and remove both ends. Wrap yarn or ribbon around the can, lengthwise until it is covered and then slipping the cards under a string all around the can. It can take a lot of cards and doen't take up a lot of space.

I love the idea from ukquilte of scanning the cards.
Reply:Apart from the previous excellent answer - scan them into your computer, make a folder and then burn dvd's for members of the family, so you can all 'share' the cards.

I do a little each day. Like when I am sitting around watching t.v. or something. Also I have a address book for Christmas cards. When I get one from someone new then I add it to the book. If someone has moved I get there new address off the card they sent. If they don't send me one or I don't have an address some other way I just take them off the list.
Reply:I usually get pics taken at sears, make up my list, address them and mail. Last year I used Shutterfly with my own image, and they were nice.

I kind of want to do that again this year, but I'm not motivated to do ANYTHING. I have to get in gear in the next week or so.

Make a lot of lists--who you're going to send them to, what exactly you want, how much postage you'll need (dont' forget notes on extra postage if you're sending overseas).

If people have moved, I try the last # I had for them, or someone who may have known them.

Look online for people too, www.zabasearch.com is pretty decent.

Reply:I put together a list of names and addresses in Excel that I can print out on labels (using Microsoft Word). I put the list together (about 36 addresses) during my wedding planning time a few years ago. I order my cards online (photo cards) in November and try to have the cards out by the first week in December. Using Word for the to and from labels really saves time. I worry about address changes after I order my cards.
Reply:I think you are on the right track by doing 10 a day. I keep my addresses in an old fashion address book. I update has needed by marking through the old ones.

I do write a short message in some of the cards, but I just sign for my family.

In the past I have sent many cards. I gave one to each person I worked with, each child I taught and then family and friends. This year is different so I will send less to family and friends. We moved and I have not been able to get a new job. I looked at cards this week, but didn't see any that I loved yet.

Reply:First, gather all of your addresses and put them in a word document, create labels. Save it and update when you need them. If you don't have a computer, get a three ring small binder for this purpose and just keep them all there. Update when you receive the changes. Organization is your best friend. I don't send out that many Christmas cards. I'm not that organized. I've lost touch with some people. That doesn't help. I don't receive that many Christmas cards anymore.

It sounds like you have a decent plan. But feel free to take a break when you need to. You are in control. Remember that.

Reply:The best thing would be to send some of your designs to all the craft magazines....if you do this make sure that you copyright your original designs first so they cant turn round and make them up as their own design.

If you want to sell any of your designs to shops you will probs get very little per item as shops will be wanting a 100% mark up so you will need to see if its worth it after cost of materials and a wage for yourself as no point in working for nothing. They would also want exclusive rights to the designs that you make for them. Also all of the materials that you use to make your craft items would have to be copyright free...maybe ok to use the papers/images etc for items that you give away but not if you want to sell them.

Reply:I would say go with some legal protection before you start plugging your product. There are several companies that are always looking to improve. Instead of trying to slay the Hallmark dragon first, start with their competition. They'll be more intersted if they think it could give them an edge. Be as formal as you can be in your approach and be sure to let them know that you chose to come to their company first because you believe in their small business values. If they reject you then start swinging for the fences. Google it up and collect yourself some contacts, fix up your portfolio, and hack out a well prepared presentation and your in like Flynt. Be careful to hide your best ideas but be sure to allude to them when talking to the representative(s). Best of luck to you.

My husband insists on saving greeting cards from the past 15 years. I live in a condo and don't have the space for every valentine, birthday, etc, etc., I receive. He thinks they are memories - I think it's trash. What do you think?

What do you do with old Greeting cards?
I throw lots of mine out, but I would never have the audacity to tell someone else he or she should throw away something he or she values. If he does not want it, he will throw it out. If you want to be crafty, you can cover a box that holds your Christmas decorations with cut-outs from the Christmas cards. You or your husband can cut out some of the favorite pictures, put glitter or fake snow on the pictures, laminate, or shellac the pictures and hang those on the tree. Or decopauge cut-outs from the cards onto ornaments. Maybe make some magnets from the cut-out cards. That way, you will save some space but still have the memory of the card. And you will be displaying your memories rather than piling them in a box where you never look at them. I had a teacher who brought the class all of her old cards and she had us cut out the pictures, and arrange the pictures on wood plaques for the walls. Some of the arrangements looked surprisingly nice.

Reply:My boyfriend is like you. I am like your husband. I have boxes of cards under my bed, years worth of cards and correspondence.

But I have compromised and started throwing away cards that don';t have a personal message. I have tons of cards that say "merry christmas! love, Name" and I've started throwing them away somewhat reluctantly.

In fact, unless people have something to substantial to say in a card, I wish they'd save the postage and just send an email. I like getting mail but not for the sake of having something to open. I want to read an update or a message of some sort.

I like the idea of sending the old cards to senior centers. I am sure that schools or craft leagues would welcome the extra supplies as well.

Reply:I say use the 3 R's rule: reduce, re-use or recycle. If you don't want them anymore, throw them out. Or you could see if a local shelter or daycare center would want them for art projects.
Reply:Before you toss them, check with the local senior citizens centers. I have reletives who live in retirement communities who recycle old greeting cards into new ones as art projects.

Reply:Depends on how much information is written inside these greeting cards. If the messages are basically the usual "Hi love, hope you have a Merry Christmas, love xx", then I´d agree with you and throw them out. If, however, there are longer messages or mini-"letters" inside, I could understand your husband´s nostalgic attachment. Perhaps you could reach a compromise and go through them together, filtering out those that say very little, and keeping those of more importance. Personally, I put all greeting cards in the trash can after the event, but, for example, do keep holiday postcards that family/friends send me, as the messages etc. carry information that will bring back memories in years to come.
Reply:I don't think cards are trash. Well, not if there's something written in there aside from the cheesy Hallmark message. So sort it out, make an agreement with your husband. If there's something nice written in there, keep it, if there's nothing important, chuck it- Compromise.

Hi, firstly you need to set up a website and have business cards produced. Get a portfolio of your ware, cards, stationery etc. Then call on shops and business's that sell cards and stationery. Show them your goods and hopefully you will get orders. Don't forget to leave them some cards etc and say you'll call back in a week to see how they got on. Perseverance and hard work, good quality goods and you should soon have the orders rolling. Go to local fetes, shows etc and have a stand showing off your cards, stationery etc. Book a stand at Trade Fairs. Very soon the work should come rolling in. Be competitive and don't price yourself out of the market. Good luck

I sell greeting cards at local craft shows and get tons of positive comments. I would like to try pitching them to small shoppes so they could be sold there but how do I do this? I don't want to look desperate by walking in and trying to convince the owner to sell my stuff there. I've read about trade shows but they are pretty expensive (fees, travel expenses, etc). and I don't have much start-up cost. Any advice??

Reply:You have two options. You can submit your offerings to the big guys, for a royalty. No real start up cost, nice income.

To sell in stores is tough. It's not even about how difficult it is to get the first card in the store. But what's expected is you be at the store each week, and stock the shelves. It's route sales.

There is a Hallmark rep that goes to every Target store each week and sorts the cards, stocks new ones, and makes sure it's all in order.

Also, you must be able to produce the cards in the quantity that they sell at each location. While you may be happy that they sell out each week, the store is not happy with customers who can't get what they want, and have empty shelf space.

There was a local charity who would accept the fronts of greeting cards to make new ones, but they are now defunct. With the holidays coming, I'd like to find out who could use these for charity. A friend %26amp; her daughter turns some cards into bookmarks by gluing the cards closed (these would be the smaller size) %26amp; sometimes trims the larger cards down - cropping the best areas. Also, if the card has the inserted pages, you can reuse them. Just carefully take out the page %26amp; reprint a new one, keeping in mind the message on the front of the card (gender, occasion, etc) %26amp; size of the card. Almost any word processing application or art program will allow you to type a new message %26amp; appropriately space it on the new page(s). You can even buy most of the standard card size envelopes to sent it off to a new recipient. One friend %26amp; I have sent the same card back %26amp; forth for several years, in our effort to recycle. We know we're thinking of the other in spite of the miles %26amp; years.

Reply:Cut the picture so that the message is gone (Happy Christmas or whatever). Glue them into scrap books and donate them to the children's ward at the local hospital. Kids love looking at them when they are sometimes too sick to do much else.

My mum and I used to do this and we made hundreds of them over the years. We also glued 2 cards of the same size together with a paddle pop stick sticking out the bottom. It made a small fan. Sold well in craft stalls with a little glitter on them!

I make all of my own greeting cards. Sometimes I use images from greeting cards I've received, wrapping paper, even interesting product labels (cheese and wine labels are really decorative) for collages. I recycle buttons, lace, gimp and ribbon from old clothing to embellish my cards, too. I keep the cardboards that come in with my hubby's dress shirts for work because they make great stock for making cards on.

Get some board or a cork poster board and take some elastic and criss cross the elastic slanted in one direction across the board and then do the opposite direction ....like this ####. That way you can slip your cards under the elastic and you can display them open or closed and even move them around if you wish.

Reply:I've seen cards glued to wreaths (the styrofoam kind). Photo holders, like the wriy kind, would work too. I took my Christmas cards and punched a hole in the top left corner of the right panel (when open) and strung them on a string in a door way. I was able to read the cards and see the pictures. It takes some playing to get the cards facing the same way and to attach the string (yarn) to hold the weight. you can also buy stands, I've seen on sale on ebay, that look like ones that sit on a counter top in stores. Here's a site, I know it's for Christmas cards, but it can be applied to all cards.

You might try to find examples on HGTV and DIY's websites. I don't think there is an individual card making show, but I know I've seen spots on Carol Duvall and other craft shows that have cards made from various materials including die-cuts, cardstock, fabric, rubber stamps, and many other unusual items. I make my own holiday cards from my pastel paintings that I take digital images from and then print them out on usually Strathmore deckle edge cards, and use vellum envelopes to mail them.

Hope this helps and gets you started.

certain kinds of scrapbooking paper might work. it won't be as thick as card stock but it won't be as thin as computer paper. and you can always find some really pretty patterns and colors. hope this helps!

I'm guessing that you are using a point %26amp; shoot digital camera. Try looking for the MACRO setting on it. That should give you clear close-up shots.

Reply:Easier way is scanning to pc, but if you still want to use your camera set it to close up (if it has that feature) it should take a clearer pic. And yes apply light enough to avoid shadows etc.

Go to the place that sold you the camera and ask for help in learning how to take pictures. Or search the web for photo help.
Reply:Take them to your local copy center. They can scan them in and put them on a CD for you. Then you'll have them all in one place and it's easy to upload to whatever site you want to. It's pretty inexpensive and will look very professional.

I don't know about the home shopping network, but marketing ideas that could very well get a lot of exposure would be:

Trade shows: Google or Yahoo Equestrian Trade Shows, if she cant afford a booth she can simply attend with family/friends wearing her shirts, carrying business cards she can hand them out to everyone that comments on the art work

She can approach (via letter, email or phone call) ranch owners, bed and breakfast owners and offer to sell her products there if they have a small shop

Look up schools (high schools and colleges) that have horse back riding in their curriculum and send information to the head of the department. Hold a contest on your site and register the contest (goggle online contest listing services)

i have no clue what blind embossing is but start with local print shops and wedding places that send off to have invitations done, they might be able to tell you who does their invitations.

Whether to keep or recycle greeting cards is a very personal matter. If the greeting card is hand-made, then it may be very sentimental to the receiver who may wish to keep it for many years. Some greeting cards, such as Christmas or holiday cards, are often kept until the next holiday season.

Particularly beautiful cards can be framed, kept in a scrapbook, made into a collage or donated to organizations that use the card fronts to make new cards. Or, you can make your own new card from used cards by attaching the card front to a new folded sturdy paper or card stock!!!

www.shutterfly.com is where I made up my cards for Christmas. I uploaded my art work and used their templates on one set and just my artwork on the other. They allow for your own text inside both pages if you want. My Christmas cards were beautiful.

www.overnightprints.com is where I get my postcards made as you can get 1000 for$100. They make greeting cards too but have never used them.

some of those cards have a tiny battery that last. from what i remember, i received a birthday card dated 1991 from greece and i know it still play the tune, probably its rare that i open it up...so maybe it depend on what is the battery lifetime and how 's the quality made.

pretty sure hallmark is the top of the line and it will be great to listen to it once in a while and that will preserve the battery.

Zero. We used to send them out but with postage the way it is and the fact that it's about a one minute deal for the person getting it we stopped doing it.

We have also noticed during Christmas that we must be in the majority on that.

We now concentrate on giving nice gifts to people and clients that have supported us and continue to support us.

First, there are SEVERAL card programs on the market, and some are probably downloadable. Most in the stores are free with rebates. You can use word if you have the talents. All you need to do is create a card like you would in Publisher, except do it in word. Word will show you the size of your page and everything. I don't think Word has a template specifically for this. It's a pain to create one from scratch in Word, but it can be done.

Reply:Sure, use the fonts and graphical stuff in word, edit it, table it, then /print screen.
Reply:You can use work for creating greetings cards etc, I use open office for doing these types of desk top publishing, there is writer which is similar in the way it works to word, it also has a gallery and full set of drawing tools to add pictures, shapes, lines, colours etc. Also it has draw which is a drawing programme which will add text to drawings as well as all of the drawing tools and options to add pictures %26amp; files etc, I find both of these easier to use than microsoft word. There are some templates which can be downloaded and it will handle microsoft documents, also free to download.
Reply:Since you mentioned Microsoft Word, then, sure.

In your document set up, set your paper size to whatever you want, either to the size of card stock you have, or to any size you intend to trim down to.

For the outside of your card, set up two columns. Whatever you set for your margins, double that for your "gutter." You will only be working on the right side column for the front of the card. You will have to hit "enter" or "return" many times until the cursor reaches the second column. Add your text and insert your graphics as you would any other document. Check your work in "print preview. Remember, you will only be looking at the right side.

The inside layout works the same way, two columns, margin, double that size for the gutter and hit "enter" untill the cursor shows up on the right side.

For inside and out, I recomment you "center" everything to make it easier.

Make test prints on a plain piece of paper until you figure out how to feed your card stock properly so everything appears in place. I cant tell you that, here, because it depends on how your paper feeds.

Reply:If you download the program from Mpix Press, you can do layout work for cards at home. I doubt you could print anywhere near as good as they do for a dollar each for cards with envelopes, so buy from them.

If you want to see how one would look, you can print it at home from their program. Check it out. The download takes a long time though, even with a cable modem.

It seems like any printer I ever bought has a greeting card program with it, so see if you have one on your printer CD that you did not install.
Reply:Avery sells several differnt papers to make cards with. Their site has a program you can download called Avery Design Pro that has templates for their paper products. The full progam does cost, but the free version has a lot of stuff.

You can also make your own cards in MS Publisher, which may have specific paper product templates or it may not (if not they have their own templats and instructions on how to fold the paper.

Reply:Print Shop Pro has a lot of capabilities and is great for cards and many other various productions, i.e, brochures, sales sheets, marketing materials, etc. It is very flexible and is far better that Microsoft Greetings. I don't know of any way to get it for free, and is is disc-driven, so you can't borrow it and install it either. However, it's well worth the price and pays for itself in the amount of use you will get. Try a discount software retailer for the best price. Good luck to you.

Work with whatever medium you're comfortable with. A collage on hand-cut Bristol board would look appealing if done properly. You may or may not want to transfer your work to your computer, or even do it entirely in a digital format.

Depends wht is the occassion for d greeting....if it is miscellaneous, then I'd say, paint a couple of flowers...or u could do a little bit of thread painting of a white sheet of paper. On that , use some nice pen or paint for writing some nice thoughts in some nice font. Or you can take some paper cuttings and stick them on a peice of paper to make it like a collage. I think you would like that!

A good way to make your own cards is with a program like paintshop pro, add your images, put in the text and away you go. Also check out digital scrapbooking sites/ blogs. Plenty of sites give away freebies. Also check out our blog, we have about 7 freebies (different kits and elements) atm to download. Which you can take into PSP or the sites you find.

How do you emboss drawings already on greeting cards, without using stamps?

Do you mean "emboss" as in using embossing powders?... or "emboss" as in embossing a depressed area by drawing on a paper with a "ball stylus" or something similar?

If you're thinking of using embossing powders, you can go over the area you want to add the powder to with a special "embossing pen"... for larger areas you'll need the felt one which has a larger nib than the ball-point type.

Or other things will take awhile to dry too, so they can be used for adhering embossing powder... here are a few:

...ordinary ball point pens

...some colored "painting pens" (they have brushlike nibs) that have "slow-drying" inks

...glycerin from the drug store (apply with any implement you like)

(after applying, pour on the embossing powder, tap off excess, then heat over a lightbulb or with an embossing heat gun till the powder melts)

If you meant the other kind of embossing, I'd guess you'd just trace a metal ball-point stylus around any areas you wanted to emboss (indent) while the card is on something soft like a newspaper section or sheet of craft foam, etc..

If you want those areas to be indented *outward* toward you rather than inward, do the tracing from the back side of the card. (there are various ways to get the pattern on the back side, but the simplest might be to trace the lines lightly with a thin ball stylus from the front, then turn card over and use those lines to emboss properly on a soft surface... or use a piece of carbon or sewing transfer paper upside down).

Where can I buy greeting cards in Ankara? I have tried looking in many places but they dont seem to have greeting cards. I am thinking along the lines of a moneyholder/ card for a wedding I am attending. Thanks.

Is there a place in Ankara that sells pretty paper? Here in Germany, we have a craft store that sells colored paper. I would go there and make a moneyholder using bright colored paper. On the front, write lyrics of a song in the bride and grooms language, that is pretty and romantic.
Reply:If you can't find one then you can either make one or have one sent to you from another country. I'd opt for making one though since it would seem more personal.

Make sure that you know if the person you are sending them to can handle the card on their computer. Sometimes slower computers don't display them correctly

Reply:If you are creative make your own greeting cards or you can get nice cards at dollar stores as it is the time you spend with your mother or anyone that counts the most--time is precious as we never know when we will have the time as life things happen. Or make or give flowers or take her out as our family is doing! Give thanks to all she's done for you to have a good life!
